I remember living in a giant fortress on the edge of the L5R Shadowlands. I lived there with four others including Cyrus, Alex, Nick, and a nameless girl who was really quiet and shy. At one time Jackson and Albie once lived there too, but the had long since died of loneliness and the corruption of the Taint. We five alone had resisted it for many years.
This fortress was a massive, ugly stone behemoth. On one side there was a wharf and a series of docks on a wide river. The river was at least a mile wide and the water was brown and muddy with corruption. On the other side of the river was modern civilization. The other sides of the castle were surrounded by dying, Tainted pine forests. The trees were mostly dead and brown with a few sickly green ones in the mix. On the opposite side of the castle from the docks was a huge series of cliffs and mountains that rose up and cut the main part of the Shadowlands off from the world. There was also a tall watch tower just outside the castle, the top of which just reached over the cliffs.
One day I was walking along the docks and became alarmed because the tuning fork I carried with me would not make any sound when I struck it on things. This was a sign that the Taint was becoming worse because if I could get the tuning fork to work I could use it to temporarily reverse the corruption in this area. Distraught I went looking for something to make the turning fork work and found Cyrus.
He was angry and drunk and going to jump into the river. I got him to not jump because he would have become Tainted by swimming in the filthy waters. I managed to calm him down and convinced him to come with me to the watch tower so we could look and examine the state of the Shadowlands. The nameless girl followed us shyly to see what has happening.
In the tower we found a copy of a comic book that we had all written many years ago to give us something to do. It was about seven young magician girls who went into the mountains and forests to learn how to fly. We also found two Tainted sheep that we had left here some time ago. They had lost all their wool and gained pointy fangs and an angry disposition. The sheep ran around biting at us before I took Cyrus’s whiskey bottle and clubbed the sheep to death with it.
We then climbed onto the top of the watch tower’s roof to get a better view. This was accomplished easily because we were all talented warriors and much more fit than we are in real life. It was for this reason that we had been chosen to man the fortress. From the top of the watch tower the three of us discovered that someone had build a pagoda and a gravel road in the forest on top of the cliff so we called everyone to investigate.
Inside there were numerous manuals, illustrations and books on the nature of Taint corruption. We also found a massive collection of comics and a published version of our comic which we had never gotten too. We concluded that Jackson and Albie had built this place while falling to the Taint. While the others investigated the pagoda, I explored the area outside. I quickly found a large white house with several large white SUVs parked outside. I noticed that there was a woman in one, so I ran to get the others. The woman in the mean time tried to drive away and made her escape. I chased after her using acrobatics and my powers of teleportation to get onto the roof of her SUV and get inside while the police came from across the river to arrest her.
She had a small Tainted baby with her that soon died. We then lead the police and some journalists on a tour of the pagoda and the house to show them the evil cult that had taken residence. It seemed that the outside world had forgotten the dangers posed by the Shadowlands and did not believe in the mission we had been set. We had to usher the police and journalists out after awhile because their inferior willpower would allow them to contract the Taint that we were virtually immune to because our our dedication and iron will.
I found several more Tainted babies, at least one of which had the mind of an adult and the powers of speech. He warned me of the rising power of the Shadowlands and I went to a waterfall on the opposite edge of the cliff to stare out at the dark corrupted land beyond with all its strange flora and fauna. The last thing I remember was being rescued by my comrades before I could be washed from the top of the cliff by the waterfall.
